World’s first foldable smartphone presented
Now, the first foldable smartphone has been presented, but by none of the known manufacturers, as you may generally assume. No, the world’s first commercial smartphone with foldable screen called “Flexpai” comes from the unknown Chinese manufacturer Royole, who claims to be a specialist in folding and scrolling displays.
The Flexpai has a bendable OLED screen, which can be folded in the middle. The fold is not a real kink, instead, the display is strongly bent at this point, because a true folding, would bring any screen to bursting and inevitably destroy.
To prevent this, the Flexpai has, at the location where it is folded, a housing frame divided into several segments. This specifies the maximum bending angle, so as to prevent the screen from being destroyed by folding. The screen has a diagonal of 7.8 inches at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,440 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 4: 3. So the Flexpai is in the unfolded state, a handy tablet. If you fold it together, it’s a smartphone with a display on the front and back.
The equipment of the Flexpai smartphone sounds like the upper class, but the device will initially come only in China on the market. The processor is a “Qualcomm Next-Gen Snapdragon-8 processor” come to use, however, the exact processor is not called. 6 or 8 GB of RAM should be the internal memory of 128 or 256 GB to the side, which can possibly be expanded with a microSD card.
The camera of the Flexpai has two sensors and a normal wide-angle and a super wide-angle lens. Depending on how the user holds the folded flexpai, the dual camera acts either as a main camera or as a front camera for selfies.
The world’s first foldable smartphone supports LTE and WLAN for communication, but the supported network standards and frequencies are currently unknown. As operating system, Google’s Android version 9 is delivered, which is provided with its own user interface called Water OS, which is specially adapted to the use of the foldable screen. The fixed battery has 3,800 mAh and should load quickly.
Price & Availability
The Royole Flexpai can already be ordered in China, however, the manufacturer refers to the first batch of Flexpai still as a device for developers. The version with 128 GB memory costs just over 1,150 euros, the 256 GB version converted 1,290 euros. The delivery is scheduled to begin at the end of December 2018.
