In addition to smartphones and Talbelts, there are plenty of accessory products to be found at the Mobile World Congress 2018. The Western Digital subsidiary SanDisk, for example, has also presented its new microSD card “Extreme microSDXCTM 400 GB” on the MWC18. According to the manufacturer SanDisk, it is the world’s fastest UHS-I flash memory card with a read data rate of 160 MB / s and a write performance of 90 MB / s.

This makes the new card around 50 percent faster than the SanDisk Ultra 400 GB model introduced at IFA 2017. However, the SanDisk Extreme 400 GB achieves the high transfer rate only with a more proprietary technology, which also has to be supported on the opposite side, that is, on the corresponding end device. The manufacturer speaks in the press release of so-called Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) enabled cards, which also requires appropriate logic in the controllers in the terminal.

With standard card readers, such as those used until now in smartphones and cameras, the maximum data transfer rate is therefore just over 100 MB / s. According to own data SanDisk is however already in discussions with other manufacturers and recruits for support for its proprietary technology.

The SanDisk Extreme microSDXCTM 400 GB is expected to be released in June of this year. Unfortunately, the manufacturer still did not mention a price for the new card. However, the SanDisk Ultra Plus microSD card with its 400 GB storage capacity, presented at the IFA, costs just under 210 euros. It can therefore be assumed that the new microSDXCTM 400 GB should settle slightly above it.
